AAK Davao in Adidas Karate Cup


DAVAO CITY -- The Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao will again see action in this year's Adidas Karate Cup set on November 30 to December 1 at the SM Mall of Asia.
AAK Davao will be led by team captain Arthur "Chino" Lao III, 17, of the Ateneo de Davao University, who won a gold medal in last year's competition.

e around are 7-years old Rick David Aquino of Davao Central High School and 17-year old Pavel Jervis "PJ" Bacayo of the University of Immaculate Conception.
Aquino pocketed a silver medal in kata last year while then-newcomer Bacayo entered the semifinals.
AAK Davao will also be represented now by four other UIC students Angelica Noro, 16; Mary Ann Pilarte, 16; Vivian Cortes, 15; and Danya Paquil, 15. The other players are Alexa Barnes, 7; Oona Ysablle Barnes, 11; Kassandra Barnes, 15; and Manuel Sy, 11, all of the Davao Christian High School; John Paul Ponce, 8, of Precious International School; Denzel Mara, 14; and Darlene Mara, 12; of Tecarro; and Carmela Marie Estarija, 15 of Stella Maris Academy of Davao.
Lao and Estarija are also this year's Most Outstanding Karatekas in the 2012 So Kim Cheng Sports Awards.
"Although most of my players are still new, we are hoping that we can still bring home the medals," said head coach Rommel Tan, who will be accompanied by his assistant coaches Jeffrey Albarico and Dodong Bacalla.
There are now already 400 karatekas registered in the two-day league including two teams from Japan under former Philippine karate coach Shin Tsukii Sensei.
The age-group division categories for the kata and kumite (boys and girls) are 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-17.
Shin will also be conducting a kumite (sparring) seminar on Dec. 2 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at the Jose Rizal University gym.

Ateneo, Holy Child, Doña Carmen win in Escandor Cup opener



THE Ateneo de Davao University, Holy Child School of Davao and Doña Carmen Denia National High School beat their respective opponents at the opening of the 1st Emilio D. Escandor Memorial Cup basketball tournament held Saturday at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
Ateneo defeated Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School, 74-
61 for its first win in the Passarelle division. The boys of Coach Miguel Solitaria enjoyed their biggest lead by 25 points, 61-36 at the end of the third quarter.
Paolo Coquilla and Miguel Belano led Ateneo with 12 points each while Daniel Manliguez added 11.
Holy Child, on the other hand, routed Emar Learning Center, 103-76 to make its presence felt.
Vincent Angelo Fernandez exploded with 33 points for the Reds mentored by Ildie Cunanan.
Doña Carmen escaped with an 82-79 win over Emar in the Junior division.
The tournament is presented by founding tournament chairperson Glenn Escandor and is sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Mindanao Cluster B director Regino "Boy" Cua.
Escandor declared the tournament open while his brother Gerome made the ceremonial toss.

Romgarjal, M’lang win Mindanao finals
 
 
DAVAO CITY – The Romgarjal Football Club of Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog Football Association only needed a 1-all draw with host Hooligans FC to rule the Mindanao Finals of the Philippine Football Federation-SMART National Club Championship which ended Sunday at the Tionko field here.
Michael Jay Fernandez scored first for the Hooligans (which needed to win by at least three goals) in the 79th minute but Sergio Alexis Pelleria tied the game in the extended 92nd.
Romgarjal, which topped the 3-day league with a 2-1-0 win-draw-loss card for a total of 7 points and North Cotabato's M'lang FC (2-0-1) will both advance into the Round of 16 (quarterfinals) together with the two teams each from the Visayas and Luzon and the 10 teams from the ongoing United Football League in the National Capital Region.
Romgarjal also beat M'lang, 4-1 last Nov. 24 but M'lang defeated the Hooligans, 3-1 in the opening day.
Romgarjal, which is representing Western Mindanao, first won by a default over the Advocates FC of Iligan-Lanao del Norte FA (Northern Mindanao, which backed out in the last minute.
Renando Mantua Jr. converted two goals in the 14th and 57th while the other scorers against M’lang were John Lloyd  Bastasa (32’) and Ryan Buenaflor (63’).

Delos Reyes re-elected as SCOOP Davao president

 
VETERAN sportswriter Lito delos Reyes of the Philippine News Agency was re-elected as president of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Phils. (SCOOP) Davao yesterday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
‘I’d like to thank all my fellow Scoopers for giving me another mandate,’ said the 48-year old Delos Reyes, who ran unopposed.
Photographer Jimmy Javier, proprietor of Beefit Gym and gym manager of Metrolifestyle was elected as the new vice-president while columnist Marilyn Roque of Mindanao Times is now the secretary.
The other newly-elected officers are Fore Golf’s Manuel “Gogo” Alba as Treasurer, Smashville’s Michelle Corpus (Business Manager), Land Transportation Office assistant regional director Macario “Bong” Gonzaga (Auditor), photographer Roland Jumawan (PRO), Mindanao Times sports editor Jon Develos (Director for Print), DXUM Radyo Ukay’s Marlon Gayog (Director for Broadcasting) and Mindanao Times’ Ricardo “Boy” Lim (Director for Photo).
City Sports Office Deputy Chief James Infiesto and his son Jandee of Bonjee Entertainment acted as the Comelec.

5th Conference Trip ko Phoenix Fuels Basketball

Duterte, Sasa, Talomo, Bucana enter semis


DAVAO CITY – Barangays Duterte, Sasa, Talomo and Bucana all managed to advance into the cross-over semifinal round of the 5th Conference of the Trip ko Phoenix Fuels Basketball Cup in Davao City.
Duterte powered by Accelerate Supreme topped the elimination round with a record of six wins against only one loss to take the no. 1 spot followed by Sasa (Cyclomax 4T Force), Talomo (Cyclomax Titan) and Bucana (2T Max) in that order with identical 5-2 win-loss slates.
Already eliminated in the 16-under basketball tournament of the Liga ng mga Barangay are the four teams from Catalunan Grande (3-4), Buhangin (2-5), Bankerohan (1-6) and R. Castillo (1-6).
“The semifinals will be played on December 15 as the four teams are now all still practicing,”said Harry Dubouzet, Brand Associate of the Phoenix Petroleum Phils. at the SCOOP of the Royal Mandaya Hotel last Tuesday.
Duterte will face no. 4 Bucana while no. 2 Sasa takes on no. 3 Talomo in the cross-over semifinal round of the league held in cooperation with ABC President Paolo “Pulong” Duterte and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) under Regional Director Regino Cua.
Bucana beat Catalunan, 68-64 last Sunday to grab the fourth and final semi-final seat.  Bucana made a hot start with a 22-15 run for a 42-36 halftime lead. Catalunan, however, rallied to tie the score at 52-all at the end of the third quarter. 
Cainan Amoguis and Lez Anthony Gabila scored 11 and 10 points, respectively for Bucana while Harry Dumagan topscored for Catalunan with 14 markers.
Talomo took the third seat by demolishing Buhangin, 82-62 while Duterte and Sasa posted similar wins after the no shows of R. Castillo and Bankerohan, respectively.

DAVAO CITY --The Brokenshire Science High Schoo, Holy Child School of Davao and Davao Jones Academy shared top honors in the Power Nutri Drink 3 on 3 Basketball Challenge last Saturday at the Rizal Park.
The four-some of Brokenshire's Kendrix Agcopra, Jericho Deiparine, Ace Castillo and Leonel Surban bested the Davao Jones Academy team B of  Jomar Tupanan, Raymond Terceno, Mark Leelo Maghuyop and Arvin Pungog in a shootout, 3-2 to win the title in the Junior division.  
DJA team C played by Joemarie Balod, Cherwen San Jose, Rhian Phete Daverao and Johnly Ver Burgos settled for third place.
"We had to play the finals in a shootout already due to the heavy downpour," said tournament coordinator Rael Diaz.
DJA team A, however, won the Cadet title via a similar 3-2 shootout also over the Shepperd My Lamb Christian School. DJA team A was composed of Nicholas Peloquero, Robert Baja, Joel Libres and Michael Rodriguez while the Sheperds were Onjie Caralde, Carl Christian Palmero, Ian Angele Redillas and Troy Cubillas.
Third placer was Colegio de San Ignacio bannered by Rossel Antivo, CJ Lawrence Enot, Diego Cero and Michael Curbo.
Holy Child, on the other hand, beat its own sister team HCSD-B, 4-2 to rule the Mini division. 
Team A was played by SEiya Taga, Kent Pastoriza, Geezon Guianan and Edmaryk Niepes while team B was represented by Aspen Dale Banos, Prince Arnold Silva, Dan Gabriel Eliesea and Ermman Gems Aham.  Assumption College of Davao settled for third place. 
Trophies and gift packs from the Living Power International Corp. (makers of Power Nutri Drink) and Virginia Foods were awarded to the winners by LPIC president Dr. Chanita Villegas-Chua, Vice President Reynaldo Tesoro and LPIC Davao Depot owner Julie Acac-Saren.
The one-day event participated in by 32 teams was also supported by Nature's Spring Water and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Region 11 Chapter under Director Regino "Boy" Cua.
