AAK Davao to next play in Malaysia
AFTER its superb performance in the Adidas Cup 2012, the highly fancied Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao team is now preparing for the fourth SK Cup slated on February 2-3 next year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This was bared by AAK Davao branch chief and head instructor Rommel Tan at the weekly SCOOP of the Royal Mandaya Hotel lastTuesday.
“That is one of the reasons why my players are winning because of their constant exposure aside from their regular training and hard work,” said Tan, a former RP national team and coach.
Tan, however, brought also his newcomers in the Adidas Cup (which had two teams from Japan) who contributed to their total winnings of 7 golds, 8 silvers and 8 bronze medals.
Seven-year old Alexa Barnes emerged as the most outstanding player of the AAK Davao team as she bagged two gold medals both in the girls 6-7 kumite and kata events.
Her eldest sister and idol Kassandra also took one gold in the girls cadets intermediate kata category and a bronze medal in kumite. Their other sister Oona, also a veteran international player like Kassandra, pocketed two silvers in the girls' 10-11 intermediate kata and kumite.
The other gold medalists were skipper Arthur “Chinno” Lao III (boys junior open kata), Rick David Aquino (6-7 intermediate boys kata), Darlene Maramara (12-13 girls novice kumite) and Pavel Jervic Bacayo (boys juniors +68 kgs. Kumite).
Lao, this year’s So Kim Cheng Sports Awards most outstanding male karateka, also won a silver in the below 61 kgs. Kumite, while Bacayo also got a silver in kata.
The other silver medalists were Angelica Noro (junior -54 kg. Kumite), Vivian Cortes (cadets girls intermediate kata), Mary Ann Pilarte (juniors girls kata) and Denzel Maramara (cadets boys novice kata).
SKC top female karate awardee Carmela Maria Estarija led the eight bronze medal haul with two medals to her credit by winning them in the cadets below 47 kg. Kumite and cadets open kata.
Kassandra, a top honor student of Davao Christian High School, also bagged a bronze medal in cadets 14-15 yrs. Old below 54 kgs. Girls kumite while the other bronze medalists were Danya Paquil (cadets novice kata and girls -47 kg. Kumite), Denzel Maramara (cadets +68 kg. Kumite), Noro (junior girls kata) and Pilarte (junior girls +54 kg. Kumite).
“Out of my 15 players, only two were not able to win a medal, but those two did not bowed out immediately,” said Tan referring to Manuel Sy (semifinals) and John Paul Ponce (quarterfinals).
Tan, who was assisted by coaches Jeofrey Albarico and Dodong Bacalla, also thanked the parents, who gave their all-out moral and financial support to their children especially during the competition. In fact, some of the parents had joined the trip in Manila.
“In the past tournaments, its was all the parents plus the support of my friends and some private companies,” Tan bared.
One of the parents, who was also present at the SCOOP, said that “the city government has never supported the sport ever since”.
Almost all of the players were present at the weekly public service sports program together with their parents. All of them attributed their superb performance because of their “constant practice and of their coaches”.
The 18-man AAK Davao team also attended in Manila the free kumite seminar conducted by Shin Tsukii, a former Philippine karate team coach and mentor of the Jose Rizal University Gym. They later paid a courtesy call to Philippine Sports Commission Executive Director Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr. at the RMSC Complex.

But Durante wisely requested the organizers to give his prized-ward at least 45 days to rest and prepare for the fight.
“Cali is still recuperating from the bruises he sustained from his previous fight,” Durante said.
Cali, 21, admitted that he was also hurt during his first title-defense against the overconfident Erwin Tagle last Nov. 17 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Cali (5 wins, 1 loss) scored a technical knockout via retirement in the third round after engaging the 34-year old fighter in a very exciting match. He was also hurt on the legs by Tagle's kicking in the opening round. Ali was also able to defend himself from Tagle's kicks by using his arms while landing also his own punches on the challenger.
Tagle swept Ali down on the floor in the last 30 seconds but the unorthodox figher from the Beefit Python's Pit Gym was able to stand up immediately to and a barrel of left-right punches to the face.
In the second round, Ali quickly went for the ground and was on top of Tagle. But Tagle was able to stand up also before Ali again went for an arm lock on the neck before cutting Tagle's left face on a hard drop on the canvas.
Ali ended the second round with another right straight on the bloodied face of Tagle. In the third canto, Tagle tried to engage Ali on the grounds but he was put on bay. Ali bloodied Tagle's mouth with his punches and landed also solid body punches.
After the third round, referee John McCarthy decided to stop the fight after checking out Tagle's condition.
“Hindi ko siya sinabayan sa style niya,” bared Cali, referring on the ground techniques of Tagle.
Cali, who was prepared by his coach Bambi Posadas against the fighting style of Tagle before the fight, however, admitted that he still has to improve more of his grappling techniques especially on the grounds.
Cali, who had once again shown his confidence on the cage, denied that he had no respect for Tagle during their match.
“Eh sa ganun talaga ang style kong lumaban. Kasali yun sa stragegy. Pero totoo rin na medyo na pikon din ako noong sinabi nya sa isang interview na para bang tsamba lang yun panalo ko sa title ko,” said Cali, who wrested the
title from Jessie Taitano via referee stoppage last Febrary 8, 2012.
Durante said that Ali's dream fight might be held sometime in July since they are still applying for their visa.
They would like to thank the support given to them by Ali's fans including the free accomodation in Manila by the Plana family, Michael Plana, Akbay Party List and Mayor Ben Bautista in Malita Davao del Sur, who feted Ali last week during his visit to his hometown.
Cali has been one of the success stories of MMA in the Philippines. He started off as a boxer at the age of 10 and successfully won boxing gold medals for his city in Davao; 2002 and 2003 in the Mindanao Friendship Games in Cagayan de Oro City and Mati, Davao Oriental, respectively. He also bagged several medals in the Abap National Youth Open Championships.
Cali later transferred to Mixed Martial Arts in 2008 and began trainig in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Despite losing in his first match against Salvador Larroza (TKO-punches) in 2009, Cali never slowed down as he won his four succeeding fights to become the PXC's undisputed flyweight champion.
Cali beat former Philippine Boxing Federation miniflyweight king Philip Parcon via TKO-punches in August 22, 2010), Josh Alvarez by referee stoppage in Aug. 20, 2011 and Dylan Pablo via unanimous decision in Nov. 26, 2011.

Sumogat eyes URCC title
AFTER winning his fourth straight win in the Universal Reality Combat Championship 22: Dekada held last December 1 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Jonathan “Spartan” Sumogat of Davao City now eyes the pinweight title of reigning champion Roy “The Punisher” Docyogen of Team Lakay Wushu.
The soft-spoken Spartan had previously defeated Russel Iniong by submission
via Rear Naked Choke in the first round of their fight last Saturday night.
His chief trainer Mars Cenojas of the Cenojas Mixed Martial Arts-Kamphuis Fabricio Davao, however, said that his prized-ward and assistant instructor will still have to fight one more time before they will challenge the current champion.
Sumogat's next scheduled non-title fight is on January 19 in Cebu City to a still unnamed opponent.
“Spartan still needs to show his striking stance in a real fight,” said Cenojas, who attended together with Spartan the weekly SCOOP at the Royal Mandaya Hotel last Tuesday despite strong winds and downpour of Typhoon Pablo.
Cenojas said that they still need to achieve their main target which is to win the URCC title before fighting in another competition like the One-FC.
But Cenjojas is confident that the 5-foot-5 Sumogat can beat the 25-year old Docyogen despite the champion's impressive fight record of 33 wins with four loses.
The 5-footer Docyogen is a fighter who never gives up and tries to do anything to keep his title. He is decribed as a very god striker and excellent takedown artist.
“Spartan has shown that he can also strike. But most of his wins were from the ground,” Cenojas said.
Sumogat's other past victims were Mark Joseph Abrillo (rear naked choke) and Renan Noble Franca (sbmission-kimura).
Sumogat already had took boxing lessons from former Philippine champion Raul Terado.
“But we still need to have one more fight that will really showcase Spartan's striking form,” Cenojas said.
Sumogat, a second year B.S. Education major in Physical Education at the John Paul II College, however, is also a regular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament campaigner. He recently won the gold and a silver in the men's 60 kilogram undercategory to earn a slot for the Philippine team to the World Championship slated in Brazil. LITO DELOS REYES
