THE highly fancied Association for the
Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao team garnered seven gold medals with eight
silvers and eight bronzes in the 2012 Adidas Karate Cup held last weekend at
the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
Seven-year old Alexa Barnes, the youngest
among the three sisters bagged two gold medals both in the kumite and kata
events, while eldest sister Kassandra
took her gold in the girls cadets intermediate kata category.
Skipper Arthur “Chino” Lao III ruled the
Kata in the Juniors Open whle the other two golds were courtesy of Rick David
Aquino (boys 6-7 kata intermediate) and Darlene Marara (12-13 girls kumite
novice).
Lao, this year’s So Kim Cheng Sports
Awards most outstanding male karateka, also won a silver in the kumite, while
Oona Barnes pocketed two silvers. The other silver medalists were Vivian
Cortez, Angelica Noro, Mary Ann Pilarte and PJ Bacayo.
Kassandra Barnes, a student of Davao
Christian High School, also bagged a bronze medal in cadets 14-15 yrs. Old below
54 kgs. Girls kumite while this year’s outstanding SKC female karateka Carmela
Maria Estarija and Danya Paquil both got two bronze medals.
Pilarte, Noro and Denzel Marara also each
got a bronze medal for AAK Davao team co-mentored by Jeofrey Albarico and Dodong Bacalla.
The 18-man AAK Davao team also then
attend the free kumite seminar conducted by Shin Tsukii, a former Philippine
karate team coach and mentor of the Jose Rizal University Gym. They later paid
a courtesy call to Philippine Sports Commission Executive Director Atty.

“This is an early Christmas and wedding
gift for me,” said AAK Davao branch chief and head instructor Rommel Tan in a
telephone interview. Tan is set to exchange vows with his long-time girlfriend
Anne Michelle Dingal on December 8 in Davao City. They are already blessed with
